$750 000 for the mental health Quebec teenagers

The 22nd edition of the Youth in Mind Foundation Valentine’s Day Ball, with a Grand Derby theme, was a resounding success last night at Montreal’s Gare Windsor. Welcoming more than 660 guests, the evening, inspired by the world’s most prestigious horse races, raised more than $750,000 for the prevention of psychological distress among young people in Quebec. The funds raised will support the rollout of awareness workshops and digital tools offered free of charge to young people, their families, and school staff across Quebec.

For the past 22 years, this fundraising event has been one of Montreal’s most anticipated philanthropic events. Thank you to Jean-François Courville, President, Quebec, Scotiabank, for accepting the role of honorary chair this year.

“As an active member of the business community, I am proud to have served as honorary chair for this 22nd edition of the Valentine’s Day Ball. More than an exceptional gathering, the event highlights a vital cause. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that young people are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of adolescence and build a healthy future. The care and generosity shown this evening are a direct investment in the mental health of future generations,” Mr. Courville said during the evening.

Family organization at the heart of well-being

Family organization at the heart of well-being

The Youth in Mind  Foundation is delighted to have the support of an entrepreneur mother with a big heart!

Her name is Marie-Christine, and she is the founder of PlaniFly.

PlaniFly is a project close to her heart. It was born out of very real observations: bright, sensitive, creative children who sometimes need a little help to get organized, gain confidence, and find their rhythm. Families who are doing their best, but who lack simple, caring tools that are adapted to their reality.

With this app, she wanted to create something different.
Not a rigid solution, not pressure to perform, but a positive, fun, and human space where autonomy, confidence, and small steps of progress are valued.
This project brings together everything she is: a structured and strategic side, a deep desire to share and support, a human sensitivity, and a deep desire to contribute to a slightly gentler world for children and their families.
PlaniFly is her “why.”

It’s a project she pursues with enthusiasm, humility, and a lot of heart.

About the app:
Through a fun and intuitive interface, it centralizes routines, calendars, and planning tools, while integrating educational and inspirational content created by experts. Available free of charge, PlaniFly promotes mental health, family communication, and the celebration of each person’s uniqueness, helping young people better understand themselves, get organized, and thrive on a daily basis.

Planifly will be launched via the La Ruche crowdfunding platform. Its founder has pledged to thank her donors by organizing a comedy night and conference on April 7 at the Grand Hall of the Musée de la Civilisation in Quebec City. She has also pledged to make a donation to the Fondation Jeunes en Tête so that it can continue its mission of raising awareness in schools throughout Quebec.

Recognizing the current crisis, Bell Canada has developed a national campaign highlighting the psychological distress experienced by today’s youth.

This year’s Bell Let’s Talk Day had a powerful theme: “Taking a moment for mental health.” Responding directly to a targeted call for projects from Bell, Youth in Mind Foundation held an impactful prevention activity at Des Sources high school in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Montreal.

The objective was clear: to equip young people with concrete tools for integrating wellness breaks into their busy lives. To accomplish this goal, the Foundation held an inspiring panel in the school’s agora.

Charles Hamelin: Inspiration from an Olympic champion

One of the event’s highlights was the panel, featuring Foundation leaders and special guest Charles Hamelin, a ten-time Olympic medallist (4 gold) in speed skating.

Hamelin, who is well known for his work in support of youth, shared his personal experience with managing stress and pressure, and underlined the importance of making time for “wellness moments” to support your mental health.

In front of an audience of around 150 students, panellists discussed practical techniques:

  • The importance of having good self-management tools;
  • Breathing strategies;
  • Knowing what support resources are available.

A school event with expansive reach

Because the Foundation wanted to reach as many young people as possible, we livestreamed the entire event on our social media platforms. This enabled students from other schools, parents, and education professionals to benefit from the panel discussions and help spread the Foundation’s prevention message.

Throughout the month of January, all high schools in Quebec were encouraged to send us a photo or video of an activity that prioritized mental health. Participating schools were automatically entered in a draw for a $1,500 grant, donated by Bell, to support the implementation of a wellness initiative at their school.

“We’re proud of our successful collaboration with Bell Let’s Talk Day and Des Sources high school,” said Mélanie Boucher, President and CEO of Youth in Mind Foundation. “By teaming up with an inspirational figure like Charles Hamelin, we’re showing young people that, even for elite performers, taking a moment for mental health isn’t a luxury; it’s a requirement for achieving success and happiness.”

We’d like to extend our warmest thanks to Des Sources high school for opening their doors to us and being so welcoming. Thanks also to the students for their active listening during the event, and to school staff across the province for getting involved.

The schools selected to receive a $1,500 grant for the creation of a mental health initiative are:

  • École secondaire des Sources (the host school for the event)
  • École secondaire la Courvilloise
  • École Marcelle Mallet
  • École secondaire de Bromptonville
  • École Pointe Lévy
  • École polyvalente-Armand-Saint-Onge

Bal du maire de la Fondation Jeunes en Tête

Thank you to our partners!

Nearly 750 business leaders joined us for a night of giving and celebration at this year’s Bora Bora-themed ball at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, organized by Go Productions and hosted by Marieme and Foundation ambassador Thomas Lebel. Among the many highlights were an inspiring video sharing young Romane’s journey, as well as a captivating performance by Jeunes musiciens du monde, an organization supported by the Foundation. Later, DJ Skittel’zz kept the energy going at the official after party, L’Après-Bal.

Guests savoured a Polynesian menu crafted by Chef Fernando De Almeida and his team, and three young participants from Intègr’action jeunesse’s La Table est mise program had the unique opportunity to work alongside the culinary team, gaining hands-on experience in preparing a gourmet feast.

Émilie Bédard wins AFP Quebec’s Award for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy

Well-deserved recognition for an inspiring young woman

Youth in Mind Foundation is immensely proud to highlight the recognition given to Émilie Bédard, co-winner of the 2025 Award for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy presented by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP Quebec) on November 12, alongside fellow recipient Marie-Fée Pellerin.

This award honours young philanthropists (age 25 and under) who, through their commitment, leadership, and generosity, have made an outstanding contribution to advancing a cause. In Émilie’s case, her commitment was a deeply personal one: to support the mental health of young people.

From Thetford Mines to Ottawa: One step at a time

In 2024, at just 16 years old, Émilie took on her One Step at a Time challenge: a 600 km–plus run between Thetford Mines and Ottawa, during which she would run a half-marathon (about 21 km) every day for a month.

Her goal? To raise money for Youth in Mind Foundation’s teen mental health initiatives while also raising public and political awareness of the importance of prevention from an early age.

Thanks to her determination and the support of her community, Émilie surpassed her goal of $10,000 and raised over $22,000!

Her journey ended in the most beautiful way: On August 2, 2024, after 600 km of running, Émilie crossed the finish line at Parliament in Ottawa, cheered on by her entire family.

It was an emotional moment for her—and for us!

A few weeks later, on September 17, Émilie and Youth in Mind Foundation were invited to the Quebec National Assembly, where her One Step at a Time campaign was publicly honoured in a statement by the Member for Lotbinière–Frontenac, Isabelle Lecours, formerly Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education. It was a memorable moment of recognition for this deserving young ambassador for mental health!

A source of inspiration for thousands of youth

Émilie’s fundraiser was more than an impressive physical challenge; it also sparked a conversation about youth mental health in schools and in the media across the province.

To date, her challenge has reached nearly five million people via more than 30 news reports on TV, radio, and in print.

Émilie’s efforts also inspired her own high school, Polyvalente de Thetford Mines, to hold Youth in Mind workshops for its students, providing them with concrete tools to better understand and support their mental well-being.

A hope-filled and heartfelt speech

During the ceremony, Émilie delivered a deeply moving speech, filled with sincerity and gratitude:

“Good evening everyone,

First of all, I’d like to thank the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the members of the jury for this tremendous honour. I never thought that One Step at a Time would lead me here tonight. Thank you for believing in my project and in the importance of youth mental health.

I’d also like to say a huge thank you to Youth in Mind Foundation. Their dynamic team supported me through every step of the project, from communications to fundraising. I feel so fortunate to be part of the big Youth in Mind family. I would also like to thank the Foundation for its unwavering dedication to young people and their mental health. It’s an incredible support organization for Quebec teens, offering free workshops in schools, turnkey toolkits, and a website full of resources and touching testimonials that help parents and kids feel less alone in the face of psychological distress. On behalf of Quebec’s youth, thank you.

I share this award with my family, because One Step at a Time is as much their project as it is mine. They were there for me when I was struggling with my mental health. And my family continued to be there for me when, once I’d recovered, I came up with the idea to launch One Step at a Time, because youth mental health is as important to them as it is to me. Today, my family continues to support me in my dream of helping young people who are suffering psychologically. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

I’ll end by saying this: for those of you struggling to cope with a mental health problem, you’re not alone. I know this battle seems endless and exhausting, but I promise you, you can come out the other side, one step at a time.

Thank you.”

Her words authentically embody the values of courage, empathy, and mutual aid that drive the Foundation and inspire young people across Quebec.

Leadership that shines through

Émilie’s journey is a source of inspiration and a striking reminder that young people have the power to make a real difference. Her fundraiser has had a tangible impact on the Foundation:

  • $22,302 raised for youth mental health
  • Increased media coverage and political awareness of our mission
  • Above all, a renewed discussion on the prevention of psychological distress across Quebec

Thank you, Émilie 💙

Émilie’s story is a perfect illustration of the Foundation’s mission: to prevent psychological distress in 11- to 18-year-olds and equip the next generation with tools that support their mental health.

Her courage, authenticity, and determination inspire thousands of youth to believe that it is possible to move forward, one step at a time.

Congratulations, Émilie, and thank you for shining a spotlight on the civic engagement of Quebec’s youth!

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, October 10, the Youth in Mind Foundation is joining forces with GRIS-Montréal and Ensemble pour le respect de la diversité to launch a podcast series aimed at fostering a supportive environment for queer youth and those around them.

Four episodes. Two languages. One universal quest: belonging.

A classroom where someone speaks up for the very first time. A hallway where another shares how they finally felt at home. Sometimes whispered, sometimes through bursts of laughter—these are stories of identity, discovery, and affirmation.

This documentary series—two episodes in French, two in English—takes us into the heart of school life to hear from those navigating the search for who they are. It explores coming out, building trust, the power of supportive looks—and the sting of hurtful ones. It also confronts the rise of LGBTQ-phobia and the ways people respond, with courage, humor, and tenderness.

Through deeply personal testimonies, raw soundscapes, and the voices of educators and advocates, the series weaves together unique experiences bound by a common thread: the search for a safe space to live—and thrive—as your true self.

Épisode 1 – Je pensais que j’étais seul·e au monde (in French only)

Épisode 2 – C’est juste du respect (in French only)

« Si tu bouges, t’es gay. » Dans les cours d’école à travers le Québec, l’homophobie et la transphobie sont en hausse. En donnant la parole à celles et ceux qui les subissent chaque jour, cet épisode nous invite à réfléchir à comment y faire face tout en se rappelant la force de la bienveillance et de l’éducation. Et si l’amour était vraiment plus fort que la haine ?

Épisode 3 – That butterfly feeling

Inside a high school LGBTQ club, students open up about their lives, joined by community workers and openly queer teachers. Against the backdrop of rising hatred toward sexual and gender diversity, this podcast amplifies voices of resilience and pride: a gender-fluid Catholic teenager, a proud teacher ally, a bigender omnisexual student, a queer-questioning educator, a trans non-binary social health worker, and more. From first realizations to coming out, these are the stories of those who refuse to live in shame.

Épisode 4 – Do better, bestie

“If you move, you’re gay.” In schoolyards across Quebec, homophobia and transphobia are on the rise. By giving voice to those who face it every day, this episode invites us to reflect on how to confront it and to remember that kindness and education are powerful tools. What if love does always win?

2024 Annual Report

2024 Annual Report

The Youth in Mind Foundation is proud to present its 2024 Annual Report, highlighting the vitality and growth of an organization deeply committed to youth and their future.

Within these pages, you’ll learn more about the Foundation’s mission in Quebec’s high schools, as well as beyond the classroom walls, through free and accessible resources for teens, their families, and school staff.

Recent studies show that young people are more likely to experience high levels of anxiety and depression compared to older Canadians. Screen time, climate change, and social instability are just a few of the factors negatively impacting their mental health.

To counter these trends, Youth in Mind plays a crucial role in raising awareness among teenagers. Backed by 25 years of experience, the Foundation has proven its impact and today, we’re striving to reach even more youth by expanding access to our prevention services. To support this ambition, the Foundation opened a new office in Quebec City, strengthening our connection to the local community and allowing us to make a lasting difference in the Capitale-Nationale and Eastern Quebec regions.

AN AMAZING DAY TO BENEFIT QUEBEC YOUTH

The 34th Youth in Mind Foundation Golf Tournament to benefit teen mental health took place yesterday at the prestigious Club Laval-sur-le-Lac. A popular fundraising event among the Montreal business community, this year’s tournament brought together nearly 250 participants, who had an opportunity to spend the day on the greens at one of Quebec’s most exclusive golf courses while learning about this urgent societal issue. The event generated net proceeds of $566,000 for teen mental health.

Thanks to the money raised, the Youth in Mind Foundation can continue to offer workshops in Quebec high schools and teach young people the basics of good mental health. Other initiatives involve the creation of free online content for parents, the entire family and school staff so they can support the teens in their lives on a daily basis.

The online tools cover a wide range of topics such as self-esteem, body image, first jobs, romantic relationships, performance anxiety, etc. to address the many facets of adolescence.
